Scagliola

If material reveals its secrets, Scagliola exists.

Using materials beyond their natural limitations, this technique illustrates the creativity of the human hand: one of the most luxurious.

The name refers both to an elegant material, etymologically derived from "shell", and a chalky, crumbly stone called selenite (or crystallized plaster) which, in its pure form, is shaped in wafers or shells.

This skillful compound of stone dust, animal glue binders and selected pigments produces the very special chrome effects in scagliola.
